Listening to Louis Prima this morning, I was struck that the two major remakes of his songs in my lifetime — namely, David Lee Roth’s “Just A Gigolo / I Ain’t Got Nobody” and Brian Setzer’s “Jump, Jive, and Wail” — made no significant changes to Prima’s versions.  This wasn’t surprising for Setzer, whose earlier career was dedicated to rockabilly revival, but for the hard-rocking, former Van Halen front man to come out with a lounge track as his first solo effort was kind of weird.

Without trying to cast Prima into some kind of pantheon, it speaks well of his style that his successors don’t feel the need to give his work an overhaul.
